For the atto-series photomultipliers, the lowest-noise TE-cooled photodiodes available are carefully selected and used. A built-in TE controller stabilizes the detector temperature to within a few millikelvin, which ensures consistent spectral sensitivity, especially near the detector’s cutoff region. Detector signal amplification is achieved through a tailored current-to-voltage converter, whose intrinsic noise is low compared to that of the detector. This allows light powers even in the atto-watt range to be converted into proportional output voltages, which can be conveniently processed further using an oscilloscope, voltmeter, or A/D converter card. The power supply is provided via a small included plug-in unit. The technical data for each device are individually measured and documented.
